Description

Many species make up this group. They also form part of the group of pod-suckers. This is more a reference to a characteristic rather than a particular species. They have a distinctive broad, triangular head, prominent eyes, a slender body and many have long thin legs. They are usually brown in colour. Many have strong scent glands. In some species the nymphs mimic ants. Includes: Brown bean bugs: Large- (Riptortus serripes) , small- (Melanacanthus scutrllaris) / Rice or paddy bug: Leptocorisa acuta

Adult size: 10-12mm

Out and about

They are most active in spring. Most of these bugs live in tropical and sub-tropical regionsbut they do occur in temperate climates as well. They are found worldwide and are widespread throughout Australia.

Reproduction and Life cycle

Eggs are laid on plants and hatch into nymphs which look like ants. They go through several instars before becoming adults.
